Smog test is very important and somehow controversial issue in California. The reason is that most of the state’s air quality is below federal standards for air quality, so strict emission regulation is one of the easy and relatively cheap ways to try to improve it. But like it or not, this is the air we have to breathe, so we should take care of it any way we can. State of California contains three different smog check areas, depending on the air quality in the county. Each area has own smog check rules: Ownership change smog only, Biannual smog check and Enhanced Smog Check. The last one is most restrictive. But not as horrible as you might have heard. The difference is that with BAR-97 Emissions Inspection System test measures emissions not just on idle, but under load, on treadmill like machine. So it is close to natural conditions of the driving car. Also in addition to CO and HCs it measures NOx, oxides of Nitrogen.
